Chapter Twenty-Four

I didn’t know a lot about spirits, but I did know without the thing tethering her to the world, she would be forced to cross over. I just had to find that item and destroy it. And if there were no items holding her here, then I could also find and burn her bones.

This particular spirit was stronger than any dead I’d ever heard of, with the possible exception of vampires, and that wasn’t really the same at all.

“Poppy, dammit. Stop buzzing around my head like a drunk bumblebee,” I said, swiping at him halfheartedly. I stood with the alpha as we both took a break from helping with the cleanup to guzzle some cold water. I had a feeling he’d taken a break not because he was thirsty, but because he knew the only way to get rid of me was to speak with me.

“Talk,” he barked, after ignoring his glass in favor of the entire pitcher of ice water. He slammed it down on the picnic table and finally, for the first time since I’d arrived, actually looked at me.

Shit.

Jacob Ledger had never exactly been fond of me, but the loathing in his stare now was on a whole other level. I could understand, though. If not for me, his brother would still be alive. The guilt and torment he surely felt every waking moment had to be overwhelming. He’d put down his brother like a rabid, killer wolf, and his mind was in a very, very bad place.

And it hurt him to look at me.

My anger at his attitude was tempered by that knowledge, and I was determined to remain calm and emotionless. “She’s a spirit,” I told him.

He frowned at me. “What?”

“Your witch. She’s already dead, buried somewhere in the woods, I would assume, of Little Acacia. The wolves hurt her at some point in her life, and she’s back to return the favor.”

He snorted. “That’s ridiculous. I saw her. I’ve seen her every time she has attacked us.”

I lifted an eyebrow. “But did you hurt her, Jake? Did any of you hurt her with your claws and your rage? No? And also,” I said, not about to back down, “how does she keep slipping in past the guards you have patrolling the village?”

And finally, something other than hatred entered his eyes. He studied me with a narrowed gaze. “A ghost. You’re telling me this witch is haunting my pack.”

“Yes,” I said. “But not just you. She killed three humans out near Timber City.”

“I heard,” he said. He ran his hand over his face, then grimaced.

“You should shift,” I murmured. “Heal the burns.”

“They can’t shift and heal,” he snarled, pointing at the line of wrapped bodies.

“And so you think you deserve your suffering.” I softened my voice. “Heal yourself, Jake. You’re no good to them damaged, and your pain won’t help anyone.”

Red had been right. The alpha was not quite…right.

He ignored my plea. “Tell me everything you know about the witch. How do you know
